Wind questions: If I sign a wind energy lease, can I build a house or other structure on my property?

Q. If I sign a wind energy lease, can I build a house or other structure on my property?

A. Landowners that have signed a wind energy lease reserve the right to use their property for any purpose that doesn’t inhibit operation of the wind farm. For example, property-owners can still build a home, barn, or outbuilding on their land. We encourage individuals to contact us at their earliest convenience if they are thinking of building a structure so that together we can evaluate any potential impacts.

If a structure is built after the wind farm has been constructed the landowner would need to abide by the conditions of their lease and the local zoning guidelines. Again, we want to work with property owners to ensure they get the most out of their land.

Non-signed landowners seeking to place a structure on their property should contact the County Planning and Zoning department for guidance. It is important to remember that we do not access personal property without obtaining permission.
